In this Year 10 History Main lesson, students explored indigenous advocacy for rights and freedoms in Australia. They began by examining the historical and systemic barriers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Then, each student researched and presented a significant moment in indigenous history, developing a deeper appreciation for the resilience and complexity of indigenous activism. They also considered the current state of indigenous rights, reflecting on ongoing challenges and the continued pursuit of justice and equality.
At the end of the Main Lesson, the students sat in a circle and proudly shared their work, demonstrating their deeply personal, thoughtful and creative engagement with the history of indigenous rights and freedoms.
Year 10 student, Bianca’s reflected: The way we learned about the stories of First Nations’ peoples was incredibly respectful. The student-led, intuitive approach helped us gain a deeper understanding of the topic. Learning about the rights and freedoms of indigenous peoples allowed me to grasp both the history of this country and our current situation. The teaching approach allowed all students to be fully engaged.
