Year 10 English

Last term, Year 10 students studied Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, a cautionary dystopian novel that explores a society shaped by censorship and control. Amid this book-burning world, students examined the dangers of a technology-driven, disconnected, and heavily censored society.

Leni’s critical essay reproduced above (written under timed-exam conditions), highlights the transformative power of reading as an essential means of awakening to the forces that can steer societies away from morality and humanity.

Through this unit, students analysed how language techniques shape storytelling, recognising the depth and influence of an author’s craft in guiding readers toward new insights and ways of thinking about the world.

Both Ingrid and I, as Year 10 English teachers, were deeply impressed by the willingness students showed to extend and expand their literary capabilities and conceptual thinking.
