The Shearwater chess team competed in the 5th round of the NSW Junior Chess League Secondary Schools Competition in our pool today — a fantastic achievement in itself. This home match was played against Blue Hills College from Goonellabah, with teams of four students competing head to head.
We faced strong opposition and went down on all boards, but not without some close battles. Harry (Year 11) on Board 1 was up in material but lost on position in a very tight game. On Board 4, Kaiis (Year 11) fought for over an hour in a tense, close endgame before conceding. Year 7 students Lev, Jonah, and Ori also represented Shearwater with determination and spirit.
The team displayed skill, persistence, and great sportsmanship, capping off an impressive season that saw them reach the semifinals.
