Year 9 & 10 Middle Lesson Electives
School developed elective courses
In year 9 & 10 students select additional studies from School developed elective courses that may be drawn from the following subjects.
Drama
The drama elective course involves a study of both practical and theoretical work in drama and theatre practices in Australia and world wide. The course aims to develop performing skills such as acting, singing, physical theatre, and teaches an understanding of theatre practices and traditions as well different styles of theatre. We will put on a major production at the end of Semester 1 at the Community Centre in Byron as well as perform shorter duologues, monologues and/or group devised pieces for a school audience in Semester 2. The course will also involve a study of the various aspects of theatre such as design in costume sets and lighting as well as directing. The students are expected to keep a workbook detailing their work in class as well as their own impressions and thoughts about drama on television, in films and on stage.
Food Technology
Food Technology involves understanding & knowledge of food properties, processing, preparation & nutritional considerations whilst addressing the importance of food hygiene and safe working practices in the production of food. It provides students with the context to explore the richness, pleasure and variety of food whilst working through units in catering, cost control, menu planning and food service. Students studying Food Technology will be well equipped to work in the food industry.
Industrial Technology
Industrial Technology involves the use of specialist environments covering a wide range of technologies. Students work through the design process from concept to realisation and focus on things such as designing, planning, skill development, workplace safety and quality of product in the context of various focus areas. Industrial Technology focus areas may be selected from the following:
Building and Construction:
Students will gain a knowledge of and have practical experience in building types and construction methods, workshop joinery and the associated use and maintenance of tools & equipment. Students will have hands on experiences in general building & construction.
Metalwork:
Students gain experience and knowledge of various metals and metal fabrication, joining and machining processes. Through various projects students will learn how to use hand, power tools & machines, welders, gas heating & joining equipment.
Automotive:
Students will gain an understanding and skills in relation to automotive industries working on such topics as engine and car maintenance and repair. Students will work on small motors, car engines & group design projects.
Photography:
This course involves theory of photography, camera use, light, settings etc., the developing and printing of black and white negatives and developing a viewpoint via the lens.
Multimedia:
This course gives the student on opportunity to explore their creativity through digital media, learning skills in the development of ideas through manipulated graphics and film making. Students will be using software such as Garage band, Keynote, I-movie, Photoshop.
Timber / Woodwork:
This involves the design and construction of timber products and furniture. Students will develop knowledge and skills materials tools and technique as well as experience the safe working practice involving hand tools, portable power tool and woodwork machinery and specialist modules such as cabinetwork and wood machining.
Music
The music elective is designed to develop an individual student’s musical skills and artistic expression, while providing a broad based music education that moves between the Western Music Tradition, Contemporary Music, and Music of Other Cultures.
Units include:
Music Technology: Garage Band, Finale, Recording
Music for Film: Critical appreciation of film music using the Concepts of Music. Compose underscore and themes for Film
Jazz Harmony & Melody: performing Jazz, Improvisation, Blues
Music of Folk Cultures: South American, Spanish, Middle Eastern & Gypsy Music.
The Orchestra: Listening to and discussing the use of instruments in the orchestra.
Song writing: Exploring the art of Song writing.
Performance: Students gain experience in performing in ensembles and solo as well as in music writing – composition and arranging. Students will use notation skills and technology to write for various projects.
Visual Design
This subject involves design and exploration of many materials and their uses as well as the safe use of specialist environments.
The body is the site for visual design. Students can select from a variety of modules including:
Fashion:
In this unit various techniques will be explored and demonstrated, allowing the student to design, explore, elaborate, construct and decorate their fashion item. Techniques include applique, screen printing, laser transfer printing and wearable art design.
Wearable Art:
From jewellery to textiles and metal to electronics, create your own Wearable Art, from concept to innovative exciting, technical resolution then watch it “WAVE” on the catwalk.

Visual Arts
The Visual Art elective courses connect the exploration of art making in many mediums and critical and historical interpretations and explanations of Art. It enables students to develop and enjoy practically and conceptual autonomy in their abilities to represent ideas in the visual arts. Areas of study include:
“My Place”: Landscape Painting
Graphics:
Graphics is a universal language used to communicate and express ideas, thoughts and feelings. This unit will explore the use of graphics in cartooning, graphic design and layout, architecture advertising, technical drawing and product rendering.
Digital Imaging:
Students will experience and increase their skills in connecting Art with the digital environment. This includes transferring analogue images, developing, acquiring and manipulating and presenting digital images in a range of artistic content. Students will gain an appreciation of the ever growing number of digital artists.
Sculpture / Installation Art:
The student is introduced to contemporary sculptural forms. These include assemblage, site specific environmental sculpture, installation art and performance art.
Video & Film:
This unit will involve content, skills and techniques that go into the production of film and T.V. This will involve production, scripting, storyboarding, special effects filming and editing.
Printmaking:
Etching, Lino block, Screen printing, Stencilling.
