Jarrah Linklater – Class of 2007

When did you graduate from Shearwater and what did you do after?

I graduated in 2007 and then worked for a year full time in maintenance at Shearwater. After that, I travelled through parts of Europe beginning of 2009.  When I returned I went straight into fulltime cabinet making. At the end of 2009, I left the Byron Shire and moved down to Sydney. I worked in a exclusive bar there, Ivy, in the city for six months, then went over to the USA for a few weeks, came back and did some work up in North Queensland for a few weeks, using my skills in kitchen design and cabinet making. I’m currently back in the Byron Shire. I’m working in kitchen construction and installations, as well as working at hotel Brunswick Heads as a bartender and I’m also studying tourism via correspondence.

How do you look back at your time here. What is a memory that stands out?

I loved it! I would not change a thing if given the chance. The teacher – student relationships at Shearwater are strong, and I felt supported and guided in the right direction in life. I am still friends with a lot of my high school teachers. For me there were many highlights, I can’t single  one out, but the class trips that we had were more than anyone could ever wish for. It brought the whole class together and taught us how to basically live with each other, and learn to respect how other people live and think. I remember for instance the Year 9 trip into the desert, how you learn to create the space that is needed to keep everyone happy in closed environments, like a small bus. China for me is a big one as well as well as North West island… all of them! I cannot compare! Sally Davison is one of the most amazing people I know in the world, she is the most trusting and respectful teachers I know. Trust goes a long way.

Are you still in touch with former class mates or teachers?

I am very much in touch with old class mates, they are like a family to me. I manage to see all my close friends from school at least once a year and there’s a lot of them!

What is it that you are currently pursuing in your life?

Currently I am studying tourism, which is something i love doing and learning about. I am saving up for a trip back over to Europe, to see parts that I didnt get to see the first time. Things change everyday so I dont plan too far ahead!
