Emergency Procedures

Floods

Floods occasionally cut off the School during the wet season (February – April). The following guidelines are designed to prevent people being stranded at school during floods.

1) The decision to evacuate the School is the responsibility of the Head of School. Such a decision will be made only after consultation with the bus drivers who are in radio contact and therefore stay abreast of the road conditions throughout the shire. Parents are advised that it is both easier and safer to collect children from the Mullumbimby High School than to attempt to beat the flood waters by coming out to the school.
2) Once the decision to evacuate is made, all students from Mullumbimby and outlying areas will be transported by bus to Mullumbimby High School where they will wait in the Hall, under supervision by Shearwater staff, until either their parents or their connecting bus arrives. Children living west of the School on Left Bank Road will wait at the school for parents to collect them.
3) In the event of natural disasters, announcements regarding school arrangements will be made on Radio station 900 2LM at the earliest possible moment. The local bus companies will also announce their movements over 2LM.
4) School phone lines are busy during times of emergency. Parents should be aware that the above procedures are being followed and that all the children are being cared for.

Fire

For the children’s protection and safety the School follows and practices the drill procedures of the NSWFB.
